Egyptian Faience Eye of Horus Amulet
Egyptian large Eye of Horus amulet, turquoise with black faience, displayed on a black plexi stand. Late period, ca. 600 bce. Size : 6.5 cm This symbol known as Udjat, Wadjet, or Eye of Horus, is an Egyptian amulet for good health (healing) and general good luck. It relates to the Egyptian Myth of the falcon god Horus, specifically in his stuggle with Seth in which he lost an eye (his left eye, representing the moon), which was recovered and reassembled magically. Similar amulets were placed in a mummy’s wrappings, over the incision where the embalmers had removed the internal organs. The ‘all seeing eye’ with rays, over the pyramid on the reverse of US dollars, is a modern relative of this ancient eye symbol (the right eye represents the Sun).
